Prohibiting hand-held cell phone use while driving

We all do this including myself, but a study in 2006 conducted by the National Highway Transportation and Safety Association and Virginia Tech showed that nearly eighty percent of crashes and sixty-five percent of near-crashes are caused by driver inattention. This study found that the number one distraction was talking and/or listening on the cell phone. Thus, by prohibiting the use of handheld cell phones while driving, the number of crashes should decrease and as a result so should the number of fatalities. The reason I am for passing a ban is not to over regulate people’s lives but rather to save lives. Passing a ban would do this. I am a little concerned with the price of hands-free headsets for cell phones so some sort of tax incentive may need to also be a part of this plan in order for these to become affordable for residents of Michigan.
